Fragrance Pyramid
Olfactive Character
Exotic, creamy, and softly animalic. Champaca has a distinctive tea-like richness that sets it apart from jasmine or tuberose. When blended with clean musk, it becomes wearable and modern.
Origin & Harvest
Champaca (Michelia champaca) is native to South and Southeast Asia. The absolute is extracted from the golden flowers by solvent extraction. It is one of the most expensive floral materials in perfumery. The musk component is synthetic.
Key Molecules
Methyl linoleate and indole give champaca its rich, slightly narcotic quality. Linalool adds freshness. The musk component uses synthetic musks such as Habanolide or Galaxolide.
Safety & Regulation
Champaca absolute may contain trace indoles that cause sensitivity in some individuals. Synthetic musks are well characterised and IFRA compliant. Appropriate for fine fragrance use.
In Perfumery
Champaca appears in luxurious compositions such as Tom Ford Champaca Absolute and Ormonde Jayne Champaca. Pairs well with sandalwood, saffron, and benzoin. In KIDA KYO, it brings exotic depth.
History
Champaca has been used in Indian and Southeast Asian religious ceremonies for centuries. The flowers are offered at temples and used in traditional medicine. Its use in Western perfumery is relatively recent, gaining prominence in niche fragrance.
