Fragrance Pyramid
Olfactive Character
Sharp, dry, and warmly spicy. Black pepper adds bite and energy without sweetness. The initial sharpness fades into a dry, woody warmth that integrates well with darker materials.
Origin & Harvest
Steam-distilled from the dried berries of Piper nigrum, cultivated across India, Vietnam, and Indonesia. The essential oil captures the spicy heat without the harshness of ground pepper. Malabar and Tellicherry are prized origins.
Key Molecules
Piperine provides the characteristic heat. Beta-caryophyllene adds a woody, slightly clove-like quality. Alpha-pinene and limonene contribute a fresh top note.
Safety & Regulation
Well tolerated in fine fragrance concentrations. May cause mild skin warming at high doses. Compliant with IFRA guidelines for use in eau de parfum.
In Perfumery
A modern favourite for adding energy and masculinity to woody and spicy compositions. Found in Bleu de Chanel and Terre d'Hermes. Pairs well with vetiver, cedarwood, and bergamot.
History
One of the oldest traded spices. Known as 'black gold' in medieval Europe. Its use in perfumery is relatively modern, gaining popularity in the late 20th century as perfumers sought naturalistic spice accords.
